Darwin inventor and angler Danielle Vague is in line for a national export award for the world-first fishing dress she designed and produced in Darwin.

The brand she formed in 2021, Northern Tide Apparel, has hooked female fishos from Australia to the United States with the funky dress designs and flexibility.

“As an enthusiastic female angler, I was tired of having to choose between comfort and style so I thought, why not create something that does it all,” she said.

Danielle launched the Fishing Dress to provide outdoor-loving women with clothing that blended functionality and style.

Lightweight, breathable and even UPF50+ certified, the dress is built for everything from reeling in fish to relaxing in the sun, employing fast-drying fabric and moisture-wicking technology to keep women comfortable no matter the conditions.

Danielle said the dress, which is nominated in the emerging exporter category at this year’s Export Awards, is a game-changer for women sick of drowning in oversized men’s shirts or shapeless, unflattering outdoor wear.

“With a focus on functionality, style, protection and innovation, we have introduced a range of

dresses that cater to the needs of women,” Danielle said.

“The Fishing Dress stands as a testament to our commitment to innovation and uniqueness in

the market. Our dresses are not only functional for outdoor activities but also allow women to look and feel great, boosting their confidence and comfort while enjoying their time outdoors.”

The dresses are available in two lengths, a kids range and are even breastfeeding friendly.

“I wanted to create something for women at every stage of life,” she said.

“Now, they can feed their babies or express without worry, even on a boat full of men.”

With more than 11,500 American website visits outpacing Australian clicks, Northern Tide Apparel products are now available in more than 30 stores nationally.

“It’s incredible to see women worldwide supporting our little NT business,” Danielle said.

“I firmly believe that strength and femininity can coexist, and I strive to embody this philosophy in my designs. I’m truly honoured to be a finalist for this award.”

The 88 Australian Export Awards national finalists generated more than $7.8bn in

export earnings last financial year, including $6bn from four ASX-listed companies.

Fifty-two per cent of finalists - 46 businesses - are classified small businesses and 31 per cent - 27 businesses - are led by independently or jointly by women.

The awards will be presented in Canberra on Wednesday, August 20.
