Jemena to transport gas from Beetaloo Basin to east coast after MOU signed with Tamboran

'Incredible potential' of Beetaloo Basin to ease energy crisis

JEMENA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tamboran for the company to transport gas from the Beetaloo Basin to the east coast.

The agreement allows Tamboran to extract 100 terajoules (TJ) of gas per day and transport it through the NGP.

The NGP is a 622km gas transmission pipeline between Tennant Creek and Mt Isa in Queensland.

Tamboran holds the permit to explore gas in the Beetaloo and will invest in connecting pipeline infrastructure from the Beetaloo Basin to the NGP.

This will allow the use of pre-existing transmission infrastructure to reach the north and east coast markets in Australia where, Jemena managing director Frank Tudor says, there is demand for the resource.

The pipeline is between Tennant Creek and Mt Isa.

“It is the most effective and efficient way of bringing gas from the Northern Territory to Australia’s east coast,” Mr Tudor said.

“The initial gas from this development (100TJ) would be more gas than is consumed in Sydney over a 10-year period.”

Tapping into homegrown resources is expected to deliver low-cost gas to Australian households and support the nation’s energy security, according to a Jemena statement.

“It will establish a credible path to market for new gas,” Mr Tudor said.

“(Which will) help place downward pressure on gas prices.”

Development of the Beetaloo Basin is also expected to generate about 4000 local jobs. Tamboran chief executive Joe Riddle said the MoU was the first step for Tamboran to progress its plans to deliver the gas.

“It is strategically important for Tamboran to secure access to the Jemena-owned NGP,” Mr Riddle said.

“(The NGP) is an important piece of infrastructure and currently the only gas pipeline route connecting the NT to Australia’s east coast market.”

Tamboran is working to have the first gas from the Beetaloo to market by 2025.
