Tenders for the third and final round of packages on the Gove Port tourism precinct upgrade have been released.

Work on the project, also known as the Gunyangara Tourism Precinct, began last year with $4.5m from the Commonwealth’s Aboriginal Benefit Account and $3.5m from the Territory government’s Developing East Arnhem Land fund.

With a million additional dollars from the Territory Government to cover a blowout boosting the total project cost to $9m, tenders are being sought to complete the project by the end of 2024.

The new works include an extended rock groyne for vehicle and pedestrian access, careening facilities for vessel maintenance, a floating pontoon extending from the groyne, a washdown bay, car park upgrades and entry structure.

In 2022 Arnhem Land-based Deltareef completed the first package of carpark works as well as a $1.4m package of works which included constructing toilet facilities, shade and visitor seating.

Chief Minister Eva Lawler said the money would be a boost to the Arnhem Land economy.

“The Territory Labor Government is ensuring all regions of the Territory grow and prosper, we want East Arnhem Land and the Gove Peninsula to have a strong economic future,” she said.

“We need to diversify the opportunities available in the region and work to grow the tourism and maritime industries, as well as highlight the natural resources and strong cultural community already in place.

“These upgrades will bring visitation and investment to a new level, creating more local jobs, Aboriginal engagement and a stronger Territory economy.”
