Darwin business news: Throb Nightclub placed into liquidation

Throb Nightclub, Darwin’s first gay venue, has been placed in liquidation.

Australian Security and Investment Commission’s website listed the liquidation pm Wednesday.

The liquidator is Adelaide-based Tarquin Koch.

The liquidation could be the end for the popular Darwin venue which last operated in early 2023.

In August last year the NT News reported the club faced an uncertain future months after it last closed its doors to revellers.

Its owners Tim Palmer and Mark Marcelis said issues around the building’s safety had made it impossible to operate the business.

The issue emerged after Mr Palmer posted on social media the 23-year-old club’s future was in doubt.

They were hoping to secure the liquor license from building owner SOLIS real estate and relocate to an alternative location, but it’s understood they were limited due to financial constraints.

In late August 2023 it emerged the building had been condemned by the NT Government due to “fire safety hazards, non-compliances and unauthorised building works including the removal of walls”.

Other tenants including National Flags and Greek restaurant Meraki also vacated the premises.

Tim and Mark have recently been living in Melbourne attempting to launch a new drink line.

Business and personal partners, Mr Palmer and Mr Marcelis, and director Karen Dunham, opened Throb in 2000 to provide a safe place for the Top End’s gay and lesbian community to party.

The pair has run multiple venues in Darwin, Sydney and Melbourne and in 2005 launched the hugely popular Resident magazine which focused on Territory society and fashion.
