DARWIN has been announced as the host location for this year’s Developing Northern Australia Conference in August.

The annual major event, which is held in a different location each year, brings together leaders from across government, industry and the community to gain insights into new investment opportunities, projects and policies for developing the nation’s north.

This year’s event is expected to attract more than 300 delegates to the Top End capital over three days and has been planned to coincide with the Darwin Festival.

Keynote speakers will include federal Resources, Water and Northern Australia Minister Keith Pitt, Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) chief executive Chris Wade and National COVID-19 Commission chairman Neville Power.

Conference manager Julia Donat said Darwin had been chosen as the host location because of its strategic location and links with Asia, its range of venues, accommodation and tour options and the NT’s key role in developing and progressing the Northern Australia agenda.

Northern Australia and Trade Minister Nicole Manison said hosting the conference would provide a boost to Darwin’s economy and keep the NT front and centre in the Northern Australia agenda.

“We are doing everything we can to ensure the Territory is the comeback capital of Australia and this conference, which is expected to attract about 300 delegates and deliver a delegate expenditure of $850,000 to the local economy, is adding to that comeback,” she said.

“Northern Australia accounts for 5 per cent of Australia’s population and 53 per cent of Australia’s land mass and offers the greatest opportunity in the nation to increase productivity and economic output.

“The Territory government continues to demonstrate leadership and commitment to the Developing the North agenda.”

The Developing Northern Australia Conference has been running annually since 2015.
