THE opening of a major $8m science laboratory in Darwin has been overshadowed after the event’s special guest was eaten by a crocodile.
The molecular science laboratory at Berrimah Farm opened on Friday and has the most hi-tech facilities of any lab in Northern Australia.
It will help research diseases which threaten the Top End’s plant and animal agriculture.

Agriculture Minister Nicole Manison officially opened the new Berrimah facility, which had its plaque Blu-tacked to a whiteboard because it had not yet been adhered to the building.
But, a pig that was supposed to be dissected at the unveiling, was a no-show.
“I understand it had a run in with a crocodile,” Ms Manison said.
