The Country Liberal Party has pre-selected Territory-born federal police officer Lisa Siebert to contest the federal seat of Lingiari.
Daughter of long-time Territory local government figure Luther Siebert, Lisa will take on Labor’s Marion Scrymgour in a bid to become the first CLP candidate to win the rural and remote NT electorate.
In 2022, Ms Scrymgour beat former Alice Springs mayor Damien Ryan with 50.95 per cent of the two-candidate preferred vote to 49.05 per cent.
Country Liberal Party vice president and CLP Alice Springs chair Sean Heenan said Ms Siebert was a proud, independent Territorian with deep roots in the community.
Ms Siebert grew up in Gunbalanya in west Arnhem Land, and Darwin and “has a personal understanding of the challenges and opportunities” Territorians face.
“She is a strong advocate for our communities and embodies the values that unite us – compassion, respect, courage and resilience,” Mr Heenan said.
Ms Siebert has been with the AFP for 16 years, gaining experience in domestic violence, youth diversion, organisational health and airport policing.
Recently serving as acting sergeant with the AFP’s operations delivery team, Lisa has been part of a team supporting the safety and security of the region.
Beyond policing, Lisa was chairman of the Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation and underpinning her move into politics is a desire to ensure the Territory has fair representation in the federal parliament.
Other priorities are jobs and economic growth, improved national security and northern Australian border protection, improved law and order and free speech.
“I stand for opportunity, fairness, and a future where every Territorian feels safe, valued, and
empowered,” Ms Siebert said.
“Whether it’s creating jobs, improving education, or protecting our borders, I’m here to fight for what matters most to us all.”
“For over 20 years, Labor has had its chance, but we’re still waiting for real progress on health, education and jobs. It’s time for leadership, not just talks.”
Ms Siebert is the third woman pre-selected by the CLP to contest the next federal election, expected to be called by PM Anthony Albanese before May.
She joins serving CLP NT senator Jacinta Price, the party’s candidate for Solomon Lisa Bayliss and chief minister Lia Finochiarro as high-profile Territory-born females chosen to represent their home jurisdiction.
Mr Heenan said Ms Siebert would bring a strong understanding of living in the Territory to the federal parliament.
“Lisa Siebert is someone who understands the Territory, its people, and its potential.” Mr Heenan said.
“Her leadership, experience, and dedication make her an outstanding choice to represent the people of Lingiari.
“I have no doubt she will be a passionate and effective advocate for all Territorians. The Country Liberal Party is proud to support Lisa, and we look forward to standing beside her as she campaigns to give the Territory the strong voice it deserves in Canberra.”
