Long time Darwin resident, City of Darwin councillor and former senior public servant Brian O’Gallagher will contest Karama for the Country Liberal Party at this August’s NT election.
Mr O’Gallagher will take on Government Minister Ngaree Ah Kit for the second time after the two contested the same seat in 2020.
On that occasion there was a third candidate, Territory Alliance’s Caleb Cardno, who took votes from Mr O’Gallagher and Ms Ah Kit stormed home with 60 per cent of first preference votes.
The Country Liberal Party will be hoping to win Karama and other Darwin seats if they are to take government off Labor in August.
A northern-suburbs resident, Brian and his wife Marylou raised their two children in Darwin and he has seen the city change over many decades.
A senior NT Government bureaucrat who worked on major projects including bringing Inpex to Darwin, he had a senior role with Chamber of Commerce NT and he now works with International Advanced College of Advanced Education delivering skills training to students.
“I’ve seen the difference between Labor and the CLP and the CLP are the ones who get things done,” he said.
“I worked with CLP Governments to deliver projects like the Alice to Darwin railway and I’m fed up with this Labor Government announcing projects but never building them.
“Long term locals tell me the last five years have been the worst they have ever seen, they feel ignored, they feel let down and they live in fear.
“Public Housing is important for those in need however under Labor, the removal of all consequences for those who commit crimes and damage public housing is destroying our local lifestyle.
“Labor’s endless second chances have to stop, if you do the wrong thing you need to be held accountable. We’ve got to stand up for residents and put victims first and that’s exactly what I’ll do.”
