A NEW brewing company is opening in Darwin with plans to offer Territory flavours and breathe life back into northern suburbs night-life with a beer garden.

Nightcliff Brewing is operating at the Lucky Bat on Pavonia Place and could be brewing by as early as next month, depending on licensing approvals.

The new venture is co-owned by brewer Ryan Lucas and Lucky Bat co-owner Justin Schmidt.

The pair have had aspirations to start a brewery for years.

“It’s a match made in heaven,” Mr Schmidt said.

“We already have the retail space for alcohol and a market here at Lucky Bat to sell almost five kegs a week, but the idea is that we also branch out and sell to other places as well.”

  • Mr Schmidt said they were also planning to turn a carpark behind the business into a beer garden where people could relax, sit down and have a brew.

Mr Lucas said they would first be brewing some flavoursome mid-strength lagers and then testing out some adventurous new flavours.

“We have plans to experiment and push the boundaries,” he said.

“We want to brew a Darwin sour by using the essence of local Indigenous fruits like Kakadu Plum to experiment with and make something very unique.”

Mr Schmidt said one of the perks of having a smaller brewery like theirs was being able to take risks.

“Because we are micro-production we can brew keg by keg, while a lot of other brewers are confined to big production runs, so they’re less likely to take a risk and be adventurous,” he said.
