DARWIN’S newest community sports club is into the home straight and will open its doors tomorrow.

Silks at Darwin Turf Club, built at a cost of $8.8 million by about 200 workers, is the product of a plan that dates back to 2004 and a DTC wishlist for a club that would be known as Legends.

In 2015-16, new life was breathed into the plan and when the first sod for Silks was turned last year DTC chairman Brett Dixon promised a modern new social hub.

The NT News was given an exclusive walk through the new club yesterday.

It features a spacious sports bar with floor to ceiling screens to watch sports, an equally spacious family restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining, play areas for children, meeting rooms and a private gaming venue.

The turf club is allowed to have 55 gaming machines.

Outside it has an undercover veranda that looks out to the turn into the home straight and runs the full length of the venue.

Above that is a rooftop entertainment area.

Proceeds from the club will be shared between the DTC and the Alice Springs Turf Club.

DTC chief executive Brad Morgan said the club would be open seven days a week from 10am closing at midnight from Sunday to Wednesday and 2am from Thursday to Saturday.

“The venue can accommodate around 1100 people over the whole complex,” Mr Morgan said. “Our sports bar is like no other in Darwin and we have the restaurant and a coffee shop that cater for all day dining.

“We are planning on having a brunch menu and may open our coffee shop earlier if the demand is there.

“This will be a true community venue.”
