THOSE wondering whether converting Mitchell St into a temporary night-time mall could work should look no further than the success of Darwin Waterfront’s New Year’s Eve event, which saw Kitchener Drive become a no-go zone.
The Darwin Waterfront Corporation has hailed its decision to close Kitchener Drive to cars on New Year’s Eve as a major success.
The parking restrictions for the event, which was headlined by Tones and I and Sheppard and had two sets of fireworks, proved a success with punters parking across the city to reduce congestion at the packed event.

Darwin Waterfront Corporation Events and Marketing manager Jess McAneney said while patrons obeyed parking restrictions, there were a number of bays available for those who needed to park closer to the Waterfront event.
“Darwin Waterfront offered over six individual (disabled) carparks specifically for the event for those choosing to drive, all of which were managed smoothly in partnership with our traffic management provider and NT Police,” she said.

“The event was a huge success, and we are incredibly lucky in the Territory to have achieved a COVID-safe position to give us the opportunity to be able to deliver events to this scale for our community to enjoy.”
