$200m luxury Waterfront hotel in doubt as Landbridge suspends works for 12 months

THE future of the $200 million six-star luxury Westin hotel on the Darwin Waterfront is up in the air after Landbridge confirmed works on the project have been suspended for 12 months – and the company won’t proceed if construction doesn’t resume by mid 2021.

THE future of the $200 million six-star luxury Westin hotel on the Darwin Waterfront is up in the air after Landbridge confirmed works on the project have been suspended for 12 months, and the company won’t proceed if construction doesn’t resume by mid 2021.

In a project update this afternoon, a Landbridge spokeswoman confirmed that activities on the hotel “are currently suspended”.

However, she said the company had reached a 12-month extension agreement with the NT Government “whilst we consider the feasibility of continuing with the hotel development”.

“Regrettably, COVID-19 and related economic impacts have fundamentally impacted the feasibility of the project,” she said.

“If we don’t resume work by end of June 2021 Landbridge will not continue with the project.”

Under the original terms of agreement, Landbridge had until next year to begin works on the project or face having to hand the land back.

The Landbridge spokeswoman said the hotel construction site would be tidied up over the next few months to allow pedestrian access to the foreshore while the company carried out its review.
