South Australia’s best Hipcamp spots have been revealed, with landowners revealing how the camping sidehustle has become a way to generate more income.

Hipcamp, a global online booking platform for campsites on private land, has ranked its best listings across Australia for 2025, based on data from bookings, reviews and ratings.

The app has more than 500,000 campsites on private properties listed across the country.

Winners for best in state for South Australia included farms in Tarcowie, Riverton and Burra; as well as a winery and a koala sanctuary.

The most remote property in the category was an outback campsite on the outskirts of Coober Pedy.

Samantha and Chris Harvey own one of the state’s winning properties, Noorla Farm, in McHarg Creek.

Previously, the couple only bred Galloway cows and camels on their 30 acre property, in addition to working other jobs.

They decided to establish three campsites after her son’s friend told them about the app.

“We have had so many people from Queensland, from Perth, if they’re moving house, if they’re going on a holiday,” Mrs Harvey said.

“We seem to be a prime stopover for them breaking up their journey.

“We get to meet so many beautiful people and kids.

“We enjoy it and the little bits of income that we do get from it help us improve the farm.”

Guests are able to feed and interact with the couple’s animals, which included cows, alpacas, guinea pigs, horses and dogs, as well as the “crowd favourite” – camels.

Mrs Harvey said people from cities enjoyed the experience of having “vast land” around them.

The couple also run a B&B on the property, which she said was booked out almost every weekend – but the campsites fluctuated.

“I wouldn’t say we can chuck in our day job, because we just don’t get enough bookings for that and it is seasonal.

“We get more bookings from September onwards.

“Last year, we had a really hot year and who wants to go camping when it’s that hot, 38 to 40 degrees.”

Other campgrounds in SA were also among winners for best Australian campsites for tents and caravans, as well as farmstays and cabin rentals.
