THE proposed Larrakia Cultural Centre at Darwin’s Stokes Hill Wharf has hit another milestone, after a contract to design the project in detail was awarded.
Part of the tri-government Darwin City Deal, the Larrakia Cultural Centre is a “long-held economic and cultural aspiration of the Larrakia people”
According to the City Deal agreement, the Larrakia Cultural Centre will “showcase the heritage and history of Larrakia and their connection to other Aboriginal groups, preserve and celebrate significant cultural and spiritual links to the adjacent Chinute Chinute (Stokes Hill) sacred site, and act as a unique tourism drawcard as well as create other tourism and employment opportunities”.

In a joint government statement on Wednesday, it was announced the detailed design tender was awarded to NT’s Rossi Architects in collaboration with Susan Dugdale and Associates.
Rossi Architects were selected from over 15 Expressions of Interest and five design teams who had been invited to tender for this nationally significant project according to federal urban infrastructure and cities Minister Paul Fletcher.
Mr Fletcher, alongside his NT counterpart Eva Lawler and Darwin City mayor Kon Vatskalis, last week released the latest progress report of the Darwin City Deal.
At the time, Minister Lawler admitted the vines of Darwin’s beleaguered shade structure had not grown “as fast” as she would’ve liked.
