DAN Murphy’s parent company Endeavour Drinks has released designs for its 1300-square-metre superstore in Darwin, along with plans for an iron-clad security system.

The store — which will have a retail space of about 1300sq m — will offer about 4000 unique products including 1000 types of premium spirits, 390 craft and premium beers and three times more wine products that the average store.

Endeavour’s head of external affairs Julie Ryan said Darwin Dan Murphy’s beefed up security features would include high definition CCTV, 24-hour security and patrolling of the local area, heavy-duty steel roller shutters, welded steel mesh fencing and lighting upgrades.

Premium spirits will also be housed in a “special room” in the store as a part of additional security measures.

“It is absolutely our most secure store in the country,” Ms Ryan said.

“There’ll be bollards in front of the store to prevent ramraiding but also security shutters that will come down when the stores not open.

“We have specialists security consultants, including former police officers who have designed this security system in consultation with the NT Police to specifically address all of the risks around theft.”

“There’s also significantly increased lighting around the area, not only of the store but also of all the adjoining roads to ensure pedestrian safety and there’ll be some significant road upgrades that will be done as well.”

Ms Ryan said the Darwin Dan Murphy’s would operate under strict restrictions, including a minimum unit price that will be above the legal requirements.

The Darwin store will operate under reduced trading hours and close at 9pm despite being licenced to operate until 10pm.

Endeavour Drinks are hosting an “open house” event in the Smith Street Mall on Wednesday and Thursday this week, with both the concerned and the curious welcome to attend.

It comes as Helen Secretary, chairperson of the Gwalwa Daraniki Association (GDA) that administers Kulaluk and Minmarama Park communities recently offered her support for the proposed store.

“Dan Murphy’s team have been consulting with me for the past three and a half years in regards to what our concerns are and how they can assist,” she said.

“The members of the association consulted with the residents and then we asked them to sign a petition to say if they objected or not but they supported it.

“What I’d like to say to the members of the Dan Murphy’s team, welcome to Darwin, you have got our support.”

Endeavour’s owner, Woolworths, has said no work would begin on the site before a review of the consultation process by an independent panel – due to be finalised by April – and Ms Ryan said the company was keen to keep engaging with locals.
