THE much-anticipated final report by the Territory Economic Reconstruction Commission will be released by Chief Minister Michael Gunner today.

The report, which will serve as the blueprint to put the Northern Territory back on track for economic recovery, will be given to cabinet ministers before the Chief Minister releases its contents.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the commission’s report would help his government sharpen the focus on the key priorities to protect jobs, create jobs and prepare the Territory for the jobs of the future.

“It’s not a report that will sit on the shelf … it’s going to be a working document for all of us,” Mr Gunner promised.

“I established the Territory Economic Reconstruction Commission because I want the Territory to emerge from this crisis in front, and be Australia’s comeback capital.

“Things aren’t going back to the way they were. The world will be a different place after this crisis, and I want us to take advantage of this.

“We need to turn this once-in-a-century crisis into a once-in-a-century opportunity for the Territory.”

The report masterplan is expected to cast its net wide to mining, agribusiness, energy, tourism, transport, Defence, energy and infrastructure.

It is expected to provide advice on key strategies, approaches and actions that will increase private sector investment, boost job opportunities and make the Territory the easiest place in the country to do business.

While the commission received submissions for about 300 projects its co-chair Andrew Liveris has stressed the final report would not ‘pick winners’, but rather identify priority areas for growth and the actions that should be taken over the short term and the long term.

Mr Liveris said the report would be about program and system fixes that will encourage investors around the world and in Australia to look at the Northern Territory as a destination for investment.

He said the commission has modelled best-in-class activities around the world to make these things happen.
