The new complex will be designed for seniors and people with disabilities, and will include more open space and a pedestrian link between Nightcliff Village and the Nightcliff shopping centre.
Member for Nightcliff Natasha Fyles said it was the start of an important project to help improve the amenity of the area and community safety.
“This has long been known as a hot spot for anti-social behaviour and so this project is very much welcomed by the local community,” she said.
“I’ve already heard from local residents with the clearing of site and locking it up … it’s an improvement.”
Ms Fyles said residents who had been displaced by the project had been looked after by the NT Government.
“Some have stayed nearby in Coconut Grove … some have moved a little further afield but they have popped back and let us know how they’re doing,” she said.
“Whatever state this building was in, it was still their home and I thank the Department of Housing, who have worked with the former residents to help them relocate.”
Demolition will continue over the coming months, with Territory company NTEX awarded the $1.1 million contract.
