THE defunct Globies backpacker lodge next to the Darwin Entertainment Centre is being given a new lease of life by longtime Territory hotel resort operator Michael Anthony.
Mr Anthony, who also owns the Ramada Suites by Wyndham Zen Quarter, is investing several million dollars turning the tired complex into a modern three star resort for tourists.

The new name for the venue is Capitano’s and will aim for a nautical theme.
Rooms have been given a complete overhaul and the former front bar dining area has been completed gutted and will be given a new modern look.
Mr Anthony said Capitano's will bring new life to what has been a dead end of the Darwin CBD for too long.
“We will have accommodation for about 130 and we’ve invested a few million so far on the renovations,” Mr Anthony said.
“It will be a place for locals and tourists to stay and have a relaxing time in comfortable atmosphere.

“The rooms are semi self-contained and there is a lot of demand for this style of accommodation.
“We’ve enlarged the pool area which will be for guests only and gone to a lot of trouble refitting all the rooms.
“We are expecting it to attract a lot of interest this coming tourist season, particularly with the drive market, but it will also be a great spot for locals in the suburbs and beyond who want to come into town for the weekend.”
Mr Anthony said Capitano’s was steering away from the previous Globies backpacker market.
“We will cater for people who want to look after themselves a bit … people coming up here for a fishing holiday or a bit of golf and sport and so,” he said.
“Our rooms will be completed by early next week and we will start taking bookings once this is ticked off.”
Mr Anthony said a new kitchen, dining and bar area would be built in the gutted front section of the hotel.

“We will be applying for a liquor licence to go with our new expanded dining area,” he said.
“The front section will be open who wants to drop in, but it will not give you access to the pool deck area.
“I’m expecting this area to be fully up and running by April or May.”
