DARWIN Supercars will be the first major event to be held in the NT since the COVID-19 lockdown with 4500 rev heads to be welcomed through the gates each day.

The BetEasy Darwin Triple Crown race is a boon for tourism with interstate racing nuts expected to make the journey to the Top End to experience the two-day event.

Locals are also expected to pack out the Hidden Valley Raceway.

NT Major Events Company chief executive Tim Watsford said the event typically brought $13 million to $15 million into the local economy with crowds of 40,000.

This year will be different but Mr Watsford is confident that much needed money would be injected into the tourism and hospitality sectors.

“We want to try to get some bucks through the local economy as quick as we can, obviously … the safety of Territorians is paramount and that’s what we’re trying to achieve,” Mr Watsford said.

“We’re happy to open the gates and try and make sure as many people from interstate come as we can.”

Mr Watsford said the team behind the Supercars event had worked on the plan for the past six weeks and was confident about the procedures that would be put in place.

Event-goers won’t be able to visit the pit lane because of strict separation measures in place between crews and spectators.

Mr Watsford did not rule out making changes to the number of spectators allowed in if there was an outbreak of COVID-19 in the Territory.

“Potentially, coronavirus is a rapidly moving piece, at this moment in time we’re confident our plans with health coupled with what government has put in place around securing the Territory is why we are where we are today putting tickets on sale,” he said.

“But in saying that if there is an outbreak or something along those lines we will monitor the situation closely.”

Tourism, Sport and Culture Minister Lauren Moss said she welcomed interstate visitors to the NT.

“It is the safest place in the country, it is a beautiful place and we know that events are a huge driver for people to come and visit us,” she said.

A campaign is encouraging Australians to visit the Territory.
