TALKING to Territorians and seeing first-hand how we are leading the national rebound and living our new normal will round out the Territory Economic Reconstruction Commission’s (TERC) final report, according to Chief Minister Michael Gunner.

The TERC commissioners had a roundtable conference in the NT Cabinet room with Mr Gunner yesterday.

“My government established the commission because we want the Territory to emerge from this crisis in front,” Mr Gunner said.

“We put together a team of champions to help put the Territory first.

“This is the first time commission members like Andrew (Liveris) could be in the Territory this year.

“It may be his old stomping ground but being here, talking to Territorians and seeing first-hand how we are leading the national rebound and living our new normal rounds out the final report.

“Territorians know that saving lives and saving jobs is front and centre for us, and the commission’s work will help us write the road map for the Territory’s recovery, and see it through.

“We’ve kickstarted the comeback already with early recommendations from TERC in last week’s budget.

“My government will have the Territory hit the ground running in the post-corona world, as the safest, best and easiest place in Australia to do business.”

TERC commissioners are in Darwin for the first time for a round of face-to-face meetings with key industry sectors, business leaders and other stakeholders over the next two days.

It is the last of its fact-finding missions before delivering a final report to the chief minister in two weeks.

The visit plays a critical role in putting the finishing touches on the TERC blueprint for rebuilding the Territory’s ailing economy.

While the TERC has received submissions for about 300 projects, the final report will not be making recommendations on specific projects the NT government should be pursuing.

TERC co-chairman Mr Liveris said the commission wanted investors to have a better degree of certainty through improved structural mechanisms to speed up processes.

Mr Liveris said the report masterplan cast its net wide to agribusiness, mining, tourism, transport, Defence, energy and infrastructure, and had modelled best-in-class activities around the world to make the Territory the best place in the country to do business.

“This is about best practice in scanning the landscape of opportunity, and then deep drilling against the priority to achieve the vision of a $40bn economy by 2030,” he said.
