THIRSTY Territorians are eager to know when they can visit their local again after weeks away from the pub ... and it turns out they don’t have to wait much longer.

A staggered approach will see pubs open with time restrictions and consumption of food mandatory before pubs reach their new normal.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner revealed today that, while it had been a long time between drinks, it was up to Territorians to hit the pubs responsibly and ensure they didn’t disobey social distancing rules.

“I’m not asking you to walk around with a tape measure,” he said.

“I am asking you to use your head, use that Territory common sense, and keep your distance.”

On Friday, May 15, the doors will open for restaurants, cafes and bars for the consumption of food, with those looking for a drink needing to do so with a meal and may only stay at a venue for two hours.

Venues will be required to complete a simple COVID-19 safety plan checklist to ensure they are operating within physically distancing and hygiene guidelines, which will be available from May 5.

Three weeks later on June 5, revellers can drink into the night with the two hour time limit removed, with TABs and licensed gaming venues to also reopen.
