DARWIN Council has revealed the Cavenagh St carpark could have stayed open if CDU had allowed them to manage the space while development plans were finalised.
A council spokesman said the city had offered to manage the carpark for six months saving hundreds of needed parking spots and keeping business flowing through shop fronts.
However, CDU declined the offer.

The spokesman said rejection of the offer meant parking on the site would close on June 30.
“Charles Darwin University has requested vacant possession of the land at the time of agreed transfer, 30 June, and City of Darwin will remove all existing carparking infrastructure prior to that date,” he said.

“City of Darwin is the owner of the land on which Charles Darwin University’s Education and Community Precinct is proposed and has agreed to transfer the land to CDU to allow for the fast tracking of this project.”
The site where the university’s new city campus will be constructed over the next four years, is to be settled on June 30 but CDU has ignored several requests to answer questions about how it will pay for the site and if it will be prepared to settle.
The transaction is part of the City Deal, a major tri-level government plan aimed at growing the economy.
Businesses ‘may have to shut’ after Cavenagh St carpark closure
Chief Minister Michael Gunner and Federal Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge are confident the project and the City Deal will be completed without issue.
“I’m very confident those (payment) details will be confirmed soon and we can get on with creating more jobs for Territorians,” Mr Gunner said.

Mr Tudge said “this commitment (to the City Deal) remains unchanged”.
Darwin council has received a development application for the Education and Community Precinct project and will provide comment on it as part of the official approval process. The response will be submitted by Friday June 12.
