RETURNING the NT Oriental Emporium to its former glory after it was gutted by a deliberately-lit fire last year could include adding a cafe.

A development application lodged with the Department of Planning includes plans for an internal cafe.

A report by Northern Planning Consultants’ Brad Cunnington says Asian United Food Service’s NT Oriental Emporium would be returned to its former glory at 305 Bagot Road, which was gutted by fire last October.

“The extent of internal fire and smoke damage meant repairs to the existing building were not feasible, and thus the proposed development will replace the Oriental Emporium with a new facility,” the report states.

The new store would offer the same services as the previous Emporium and could also include an internal cafe to create a more rounded shopping experience for customers.

“The bulk of the new building will provide a combined warehouse/shop/showroom sales area for wholesale, direct-to-public sales and storage (for distribution) of food and food-related products, appliances, kitchen and catering equipment and associated products,” Mr Cunnington wrote in the report. “Towards the western extent of the building, separate bottle shop, meat processing (butchering) areas and a cafe, with administration areas on the first floor.

“The complementary food premises-cafe will be available to staff, visitors and the general public, and is intended as a complementary component to the primary uses.

“The premises will provide combined storage of products for distribution, wholesale, showroom sales and retail, with on-site sales to restaurateurs, caterers, food premises, distributors and the general public.”

The new store is also expected to include up to 30 carparking spaces, 22 of which would be on site and eight on the De Latour Street road reserve.

The proposal will be on exhibition with the department until midnight on Friday, February 26.

The store has temporarily relocated to a vacant building at 1/269 Bagot Road, a few doors down from the original site.
