The new name for Darwin’s SkyCity Casino at Mindil Beach has finally been revealed ... and it’s a blast from the past

THE new name for Darwin’s SkyCity Casino will be Mindil Beach Casino and Resort.

The casino’s new owner, America’s Delaware North, has registered the name with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

The complex was named Mindil Beach Casino from 1983-85 when it was owned by the Federals Hotel Group.

Delaware North, one of the largest privately held hospitality and food service companies in the world, is expected to officially take over ownership of the casino at the end of April.

Regulatory approval has been given for the purchase and the company has flown a transitional ownership team to Darwin to prepare for handover.

Delaware North is tight-lipped about expansion and says it’s business as usual.

Delaware North co-chief executive officer Louis Jacobs said the company’s extensive business interests in resorts were a good fit with its Northern Territory operations.

Mr Jacobs said Delaware North was looking forward to working with the NT’s Tourism Department to market its new casino and the Territory as a destination in the US.

“We are thrilled to have grown our business into a diversity of operations across the country,” he said.

The US company and SKYCITY Entertainment Group signed an agreement last November to sell the Darwin business, excluding the land at Little Mindil, for $188 million.

Little Mindil remains in SKYCITY ownership, which is currently running a separate process to sell the prime waterfront site.

Delaware North already has NT resort interests at Kings Canyon in Central Australia, owns the Lizard Island resort in Queensland and hotels and food and beverage outlets across Australia.

It plans to use its global network to lure thousands of new tourists.

The start of direct Qantas flights from Darwin to Uluru will allow the US giant to capitalise on attracting new tourists to its Darwin and Kings Canyon operations
