There has been a lot of resistance to Dan Murphy’s setting up in Darwin.

The Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education has released a video to its subscribers, aimed at turning Woolworths stakeholder’s against the Darwin Dan Murphy’s development at today’s public shareholder meeting.

The video message, which was released last week, told subscribers Woolworths was trying to “fatten” up the Woolworths stock ahead of its potential sale next year.

In July this year, the company announced it would be merging Endeavour Drinks with hotels and gaming branch ALH group

The video also said the company was ignoring, schools, families and indigenous communities who wanted to be protected from the influence and presence of alcohol and provided a letter which subscribers could share, addressed to Woolworth’s chairman Gordon Cairns.

A FARE spokeswoman told the NT News the alcohol-research body would ask the Woolworths to end their NT action at the meeting.

Endeavour Drinks corporate services general manager Shane Tremble said the presentation wouldn’t sway any decision to establish a Dan Murphy’s in Darwin.

“FARE will use that AGM as an opportunity to grandstand and push their agenda however the establishment of a Darwin Dan Murphy’s is not a specific item on the agenda at the AGM,” he said.

“We understand there has been very limited response (the video).”

Mr Tremble said they would take on board any concerns their shareholders had but AGM wouldn’t have an impact the future of Darwin’s Dan Murphy’s.

“While we will always listen to any member of the community, we continue to be guided not by special interest groups but by the broader Darwin and Territory community,” he said.

“It will only be the outcome of the appeal which will decide whether we proceed with our application in Darwin.

“We are continued to be heartened by the level of support we are receiving from people within the Darwin community itself.

Mr Tremble said the continued opposition of the Darwin Dan Murphy’s plan confused him.

“FARE have been consistent in their opposition to this application,” he said.

“We’re puzzled as to why, given a temperance advocating organisation in Melbourne has taken such a high profile on this case in Darwin.”
