2020 looms as a big task for the new boss of Hospitality NT

THE new boss of Hospitality NT expects a lean 2020 as the Top End battles difficult economic conditions

THE new boss of Hospitality NT expects a lean 2020 as the Top End battles difficult economic conditions.

AFTER five year’s under the leadership of Territory Hospitality icon Des Crowe, Hospitality NT has a new man at the top - incoming chief executive Alex Bruce, who previously worked as the Industry Engagement manager, will hold the position for at least three years after his first day in the position last Friday.

Mr Bruce admits he has “Ronald McDonald sized shoes” to fill but is confident in his team and their vision as well as the strong condition his predecessor left the industry in.

But he said 2020 would be another lean one for the hospitality industry.

“There’s a lot less money around town. It’s not just our sector, it’s across the board, a lot more dealing with the post Index bubble, so we work where we can but what you may have seen a bit more of, in everything from cafes and restaurants through to pubs, is the owner operators back on the tools more,” Mr Bruce said.

“Employment is one of the only controllable costs when declining so you’ll see a lot of people put a lot of hours in themselves just to try and weather the storm and hope it does turn.”

Reducing red tape, excessive costs on businesses and creating opportunities are his big priorities next year, as he introduces himself to his 160 odd members in the coming weeks.

“At this stage all licensees are going to be sent a new bill in October next year for tax, a risk-based licensing fee they’re calling it,” he said.

“That’s just another impost on businesses whilst it’s lean but looking at 2020 we’ll be going to government and seeking further deferral of those fees.”

The election looms as another big item while the recent moratorium on alfresco dining fees show the opportunities which can be passed onto local businesses.

“It’s important for me to talk to all candidates and parties to find out where they sit with regards to the hospitality industry and ensure our workers, our families, our business operators are being looked after,” he said.

“With the economy, especially in Darwin and being where it is right now, any costs that businesses can avoid or hold off right now will ultimately mean there’s less businesses closing.”
