A woman has died after entering a stranger's home in the early hours of the morning.
Police were called to a duplex in the suburb of Tugun on the border of Queensland and NSW at 1.40am on Tuesday.
Officers were following up on reports an “unknown woman” had entered a premises at Partridge Place.
“The homeowner has been awoken by this woman in the backyard of his premises,” Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn said.
“He has confronted that woman, detained her, and contacted police.”
Detective Ahearn explained that the homeowner detained the woman by allegedly “holding [her] down on the ground”.
There were four people home at the time including two children.
When police arrived on the scene a short time later, the woman was discovered unresponsive.
They attempted CPR until paramedics arrived but were unable to revive her.
She was declared dead at the scene.
“It’s people’s right to defend their property and certainly use reasonable force necessary to affect that defence,” Detective Ahearn said.
“So like any person who would be woken and find an intruder on their house, this person has taken the decision to detain that person.”
The woman has not yet been identified by police as her next of kin are yet to be informed of her death.
A forensic examination of the scene is currently underway and police are conducting a doorknock of neighbouring homes.
Investigations are ongoing and police are appealing for anyone who may have been in the vicinity of the home between midnight and 1.40am who may have heard a disturbance or seen a woman walking through surrounding streets to come forward.
