Man charged with murdering teenager Cassius Turvey now faces more offences

The man accused of murdering an Aboriginal teenager has now been charged with more offences stemming from the same alleged incident.

The man charged with murdering a Perth teenager with a metal pole has now also been charged over an alleged attack on the boy’s friend.

Aboriginal schoolboy Cassius Turvey, 15, and his friends had just stepped off a bus and were walking along Patterson Drive in Middle Swan about 4.30pm on October 13 when a black Ford Ranger utility allegedly pulled up next to them.

Police said Jack Steven James Brearley, 21, exited the vehicle and ran towards them, allegedly bashing Cassius with a metal pole.

Cassius suffered severe head injuries, a seizure and two strokes, ultimately ending up in an induced coma before he died on Sunday.

It was revealed on Friday that Mr Brearley had since been charged with aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm and stealing.

“It will be alleged that the man assaulted a 13-year-old boy who was in company with Cassius by hitting him with a metal pole, believed to a shopping trolley handle,” police said in a statement.

“Police will also further allege that the man stole the boy’s walking crutches and his cap.”

Mr Brearley will face Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on November 9.

A GoFundMe page for the Turvey family has so far raised more than $388,000.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday described the boy’s death as a “terrible tragedy”.
