Disturbing new details surrounding the death of a five-week-old baby have been revealed in court after a man and woman were charged with the child’s murder.
Robert Alan Gee, 44 and Kristie Lee Willmot, 36, were not brought into Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Thursday after their arrest earlier in the morning.
They are both charged with murdering baby Michael Willmot in June last year.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Stephen Cochrane told the court the child succumbed to “significant head trauma” and had suffered fractures to his ribs and legs.
He said the injuries were consistent with a “shaking event”.
Sergeant Cochrane said the prosecution’s case was Mr Gee, from Stretton, caused the injuries to baby Michael.
Ms Willmot, who is from Zillmere and is Michael’s biological mother, is alleged to have been aware of the injuries caused to her son and made a decision not to take action, Sergeant Cochrane said.
The pair’s lawyer, Bettina Webb, and Sergeant Cochrane sought a lengthy adjournment for a brief of evidence to be prepared.
Mr Gee and Ms Willmot will return to court on March 1 next year.
Earlier in the day, Logan District Child Protection and Investigation Unit Detective Inspector Mark White said paramedics were called to a caravan park on Old Chatswood Rd, Daisy Hill about 6.45pm on June 14, 2021 following reports of an unresponsive baby.
The child was transported to Logan Hospital where he was declared dead at 8.30pm.
“An investigation of this nature is very complex and one of the things that we were waiting on was some clarity around the medical examination of the child,” Detective White said.
“Both of these people were known to the deceased child and were the focus of our investigation from the start,” he said.
He also revealed distressing information about the death of the child, and said the five-week-old had sustained significant injuries.
“What I can say is that the medical examination of the child disclosed significant internal injuries.
“Information we have from the examination was that the injuries were not caused by any accident and that there would have been a significant force used to sustain those injuries.
“It was quite clear, as at the end of that medical examination process, what the cause of death was, and the extent of the injuries that this five-week-old child had sustained.”
Police are appealing to members of the public with any information about the incident, or who might have spoken to the two people charged around the time of the child’s death to come forward.
“Operation Tango Triandra” was launched by Logan Child Protection and Investigation Unit detectives with the assistance of the Child Trauma Task Force, Crime and Intelligence Command,” Detective White said. He also thanked those involved in the investigation for their commitment over the past 18 months.
