The collision occurred about 10.10pm on Tuesday, causing the B-double to roll down an embankment just north of the Townsville crematorium, police said.

The driver of the B-double, a 64-year-old Gulliver man, sustained significant injuries and died at the scene.

The 61-year-old male driver of the semi-trailer was transported to Townsville University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Senior Sergeant Scot Warrick said the semi-trailer was travelling north and carrying a concrete and steel pumping device, and “we suspect” the driver lost control.

“In an attempt to regain control of that vehicle it appears to have crossed onto the incorrect side of the road … and the B-double has collided with the trailer,” Sergeant Warrick said.

“Unfortunately, it’s caused the pumping device to come loose and that has impacted the cabin of the B-double.

“Sadly, the 64-year-old Townsville man that was driving the B-double was killed instantly.”

Sergeant Warrick said police were unsure what caused the semi-trailer to lose control.

Police said they released vision of the crash scene after TV crews were denied access.

Traffic was diverted for more than 12 hours before the road was reopened at 2.30pm on Wednesday.

The forensic crash unit is investigating.
