Police have revealed more frightening details of the death of a 16-year-old schoolboy, who was allegedly stabbed to death at a Melbourne train station.

A 17-year-old boy is in custody after another teenager was stabbed to death in a confrontation between boys from two schools near a major train station.

Pasawm Lyhym, 16, died after he was allegedly stabbed after school about 3.45pm on Thursday, sparking a major police operation and manhunt for the offenders.

Victoria Police said they have taken a Caroline Springs boy into custody and have identified two other boys they believe were involved in the horrifying incident at Sunshine station in Melbourne’s north.

Detective Superintendent Janet Stevenson, Crime Command, says police have not yet found the weapons involved.

“We are making progress on that as we speak, but we would encourage those two males to contact the local police and arrange themselves to be presented at a police station or contact us,” Detective Superintendent Janet Stevenson, Crime Command, told reporters on Friday afternoon.

Detective Superintendent Stevenson said two groups from two different schools were involved in the incident.

“They are schoolchildren in around the 15 or 16-year-old mark and they know each other,” Detective Superintendent Stevenson said.

“They’ve met down at Sunshine near the bus station and that’s where an altercation has taken place.

“There was one group of schoolchildren from one school in one area and an aggressive group of boys attended there and they looked as though they were there for a purpose.

“It didn’t look like an organised fight.”

Earlier on Friday, CCTV footage was released that captured a knife-wielding man running near Sunshine Station in the moments after a Melbourne teenager was fatally stabbed.

The male figure, dressed in a black jacket and blue face mask, can be seen on the video footage running through alleyways in the direction of the station, wielding a large machete-like object.

Police are unsure about the motivation behind the attack and it’s unclear whether the two groups knew each other, but Detective Superintendent Stevenson reiterated it appeared the “aggressive team looked as though they had some sort of purpose”.

“The aggressors were running in the street towards those persons so it did look as though they were the aggressors,” she said.

David Lord, the principal of Staughton College, where Pasawm was a student, said the school community was reeling in the wake of his death.

“The Staughton College community is shocked at the senseless death of one of our students yesterday at Sunshine,” he said.

“We are wrapping our arms around the family and friends of that student and ensuring that students and staff have all the support they need.”

The Department of Education also expressed its “deepest sympathy” for the student’s family and friends, as well as the wider school community.

Police also revealed two others, aged between 16 and 17, were injured in the altercation. One was taken to hospital and the other treated at the scene.

Pasawm’s 24-year-old brother, Mawn, spoke to the media on Friday morning when he returned to the scene to lay flowers.

“He was funny, really nice, a welcoming and kind person,” Mr Lyhym told the Herald Sun.

The two had planned to see the new Fast And Furious movie together later that evening, with Mr Lyhym instead now being forced to come to terms with the shock of losing his sibling.

A 16-year-old cousin of Pasawm witnessed the daylight stabbing, telling the Herald Sun that while she did not see the offender’s face, she did see the knife in his hand.

“I tried to run and get help,” she said.

“I didn’t want to look. It was all so fast.”
