A major Melbourne freeway has reopened after a serious collision caused significant delays for morning commuters on Wednesday.

Motorists faced a chaotic commute into work after a motorcyclist ran into the back of a car on Melbourne’s Eastern Freeway, which resulted in all inbound lanes being shut between Doncaster and Bulleen roads.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said a motorbike was travelling towards the city at Doncaster in a banked-up area of traffic and rear-ended the car in front.

She said the crash caused the rider, a 22-year-old Warrandyte man, to fall off his motorbike.

Ambulance Victoria said the motorcyclist was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition with non-life threatening upper and lower body injuries.

All citybound lanes were closed on the major thoroughfare between Doncaster and Bulleen roads about 8.30am, with traffic just passing through via the left emergency lane.

Traffic was banked back about 5km to Middleborough Road as emergency services responded to the incident.

Emergency services are at the scene of a serious collision on the Eastern Freeway.

A Department of Transport spokesperson said the closed lanes had reopened about 9.40am

“Citybound lanes of the Eastern Freeway, Doncaster are now open following an earlier closure due to a serious collision; however, the right lane remains closed with speed set to 40km/h,” they said.

“Delays persist with Doncaster Road or Whitehorse Road better alternatives to the Eastern Freeway.

“The right lane will open as soon as it safe to do so.”
