Raygun’s ‘weirdo’ Halloween act as Aussie takes world by storm all over again

Aussie Olympic breakdancer Raygun has come clean on her true feelings after she once again took the world by storm.

It was always going to happen but Aussie Olympic breakdancing sensation Raygun has become the hottest costume this Halloween.

Rachael “Raygun” Gunn sent social media into a frenzy during the Olympics after she was mocked around the world for some of her more unique moves.

While there was widespread derision for her performance which included kangaroo hopping, the sprinkler and sliding around the stage to name a few moves, she was also criticised for wearing Australia’s team kit instead of streetwear like all the other competitors.

Becoming an instant meme, Raygun arguably became the breakout star of the Olympics which has extended all the way to Halloween.

But while some people believed that “Raygun will hate this Halloween”, the truth appears to be quite the opposite, the woman herself revealed.

In an interview with Fox 101.9 Melbourne’s Fifi, Fev & Nick for Breakfast, Raygun appeared to be enjoying it.

Nick Cody said it was likely that Gunn would have been the “most dressed as athlete”, adding “Warnie wouldn’t be close”.

“I know,” she replied. “I was coming home from the shops yesterday and I saw someone dressed as me out trick-or-treating with their kids. I wound down the window and I was like, ‘I love your costume’, and they were stunned.”

Brendan Fevola asked if she dressed up as herself to go trick-or-treating.

“I didn’t go trick-or-treating, I was just the weirdo shouting out from the car,” she said.

And Cody was correct as the internet was flooded with people putting in their best Raygun, including Matildas star Courtnee Vine.

While it’s months on from the Olympics, Gunn is said the sudden rise to fame — or infamy — has been a rollercoaster.

“I’m still processing, to be honest,” Raygun said.

“It’s surreal to me to me welcomed onto this Melbourne breakfast show and all this attention and excitement — and not so excitement — around me has been totally wild.

“So it’s still something I’m coming to grips with to be honest.”

And Gunn said she’s still getting recognised in the street.

“If I wear a baseball cap, I definitely get recognised,” Gunn said.

“It’s something I’ve had to get used to that people are looking at me funny and coming up to me and saying, ‘Are you who I think you are?’”

Asked if she would be going into the jungle for I’m a Celebrity Get Me Outta Here, Gunn again shut down a move into reality TV.

But she added that “we do have some things behind-the-scenes that we’re working on”, adding that she wanted to promote creativity.

Having launched a collaboration with Finder earlier in the week where she challenged Australians to prove they can breakdance better.

Gunn won the 2023 WDSF Oceania Breaking Championships in Sydney to earn her place in the Olympics.

“I’ve heard some of you can do better than me,” Raygun said in the video. “Really? Let’s find out, shall we?”

She then dances to a beat of Finder’s “beat track” jingle, which punters must also dance along to in their dance video submissions.

“Think you can do better? Let’s find out,” Raygun said at the end of the video.

The best solo dancer will win $5000, and $10,000 is up for grabs for the best dance crew of two or more people.

Unfortunately for Gunn, she was unable to trademark her nickname.

The Daily Telegraph reports an application to register the name Raygun was filed by Gunn with the Australian trademarks office in August 23, just a week after her Olympics performance.

The report claims Gunn was attempting to secure the name for use across “a range of goods and services, including software, NFTs, clothing and entertainment”.

But Gunn’s application clashed with pre-existing trademarks, including one filed by Raygun Limited in July 2017, which was later registered and published in 2019.

There are several longstanding clothing and software businesses trading under the name Raygun, so the bid to trademark her name appears to have come unstuck.
