Dave Warner can’t resist dig at home fans after Aussie World Cup triumph

While most of the Australian team was being applauded for its classy World Cup triumph, David Warner took a different approach.

How 'Gutsy' Cummins shell shocked India

The Australian men’s cricket team is the toast of the sporting world on Monday following a Cricket World Cup victory that few saw coming.

The Aussies were huge underdogs for the final against hosts India, with pundits including noted cricket expert Gideon Haigh giving a swift “no” when asked if Pat Cummins’ side had any chance at Narendra Modi Stadium.

But the men in yellow rocked fans and bookmakers alike with a complete performance that resulted in a record-extending sixth ODI title.

The manner of their victory and post-match celebrations also came in for praise, particularly Cummins, who was labelled “faultless” by Ricky Ponting and was also singled out for taking photos for the team’s support staff.

And then there’s Dave Warner.

At 37 years of age, Warner is an elder statesmen in this Australian side and among the most experienced performers in the sport.

So a tweet he posted in the hours after Australia’s momentous victory left a slightly bitter taste among all the post-match festivities.

“Well did you see that happening??” Warner posed to his 2.7 million followers.

“We did, come on Australia. 0-2 and written off.”

He capped it off with two “thumbs up” emojis.

It was of course a shot at detractors who wrote Australia’s hopes of winning the World Cup off following heavy defeats to India and South Africa to commence its campaign.

The Aussies then rebounded with nine straight victories, including nailbiting wins over New Zealand and Afghanistan along the way.

The “writing us off” line seemed to be adopted as a team mantra as spinner Adam Zampa also referenced it in a social post holding the trophy.

Thankfully most replies to Warner’s post were positive, with a great number coming from grateful Pakistani fans who didn’t want to watch India lift the title.

Others felt it had been reasonable for observers to doubt Australia’s chances following those opening two defeats.

“Congrats David! But you can’t really blame the world for making fun of the Aussies at the bottom of the table for once in forever,” was one reply.

“You guys are something else, generation after generation.”

Another suggested Warner was stating the obvious, replying: “Yes (the) entire world saw and witnessed. Congratulations champions.”

“Well done, Aussies,” wrote another. “The way you came back from the bottom of the table and then won all matches is remarkable, and especially beating the unbeatable side in the end with ease is the Aussies we know.”

One fan predicted India’s time would come again, referencing the 2003 and 2011 deciders.

“Bounce back time for sure!” they wrote. “We will meet again, after every 2003 there will be a 2011.”

Australia beat India in the 2003 final before the Indians overcame Sri Lanka eight years later.

There were also plenty of suggestions some divine intervention may have helped Cummins’ victorious outfit.

“You should know,” wrote another X user, “all Pakistanis were praying for your victory.”
