Mr Trump has vowed to impose mass deportations if he is elected and has also said he will impose 200 per cent tariffs on cars coming from Mexico, as well as military action against drug cartels.
The last time Mr Trump was president he promised to build a wall on the Mexican border and he has said he will finish it when he enters office again.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, who only took office last month, seemed unfazed by Mr Trump’s win.
“We are a free, independent, sovereign country and there will be good relations with the United States,” she said.
Meanwhile there has been radio silence from the Kremlin after there was some speculation that Vladimir Putin may congratulate Mr Trump.
Mr Trump avoided criticising the Russian president in his campaign while his Democrat rival Kamala Harris called him a “murderous dictator”.
“I’m not aware of any plans [for President Putin] to congratulate Trump,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told theBBC.
“Don’t forget that [America] is an ‘unfriendly country’ which is directly and indirectly involved in a war against our state.”
Polls from traditional US media outlets had predicted the race to the White House to be on a knife edge, but the Republican candidate fared far better than Ms Harris as results rolled in on Wednesday.
While Ms Harris is yet to formally concede, other world leaders from all corners of the globe have begun sharing their congratulatory messages with the man they will be dealing with on everything America in 2025.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reflected on the “important moment for the world” and said he hoped Australia can work closely with Mr Trump’s administration to achieve stability in the Indo-Pacific.
Promises of ending global conflicts and easing tensions have been a major feature in Mr Trump’s campaign, with the President-elect vowing to set things straight with Russia among other geopolitical flashpoints.
“I congratulate President Trump on his election victory,” Mr Albanese said in a statement released on Wednesday night.
“The election of the President of the United States is always an important moment for the world, for our region and for Australia.
“Our Government will work closely with the new Trump Administration to realise the benefits of our strong economic partnership.
“The United States has long played a leadership role in the stability and security of the Indo-Pacific. Australia will strive to strengthen the co-operation between our two nations in the region.
“Australia and America are old allies and we are true friends. Our nations are bound by a history of shared sacrifice, a commitment to common values and – above all – enduring respect and affection between our peoples.
“I look forward to talking with President Trump and working with him in the best interests of both our nations.”
UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer released a statement shortly after Fox News declared Mr Trump the victor.
“Congratulations President-elect Trump on your historic election victory. I look forward to working with you in the years ahead,” he said.
“As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.
“From growth and security to innovation and tech, I know that the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come.”
It came as China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning vowed to handle negotiations with the US with “mutual respect” and that the superpower “respects the choice of the American people”.
“We will continue to approach and handle China-US relations based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation,” Mao said.
“Our policy toward the United States has been consistent,”
“We respect the choice of the American people ... After the US election results are released and officially announced, we will handle related matters in accordance with usual practice.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also congratulated Mr Trump and applauded his “peace through strength” approach. With the Ukraine war still raging, Zelensky hopes a new leader of the US can cut through the muck and produce meaningful change for the millions of civilians stuck in a war zone.
“I recall our great meeting with President Trump back in September, when we discussed in detail the Ukraine-U.S. strategic partnership, the Victory Plan, and ways to put an end to Russian aggression against Ukraine,” said Zelenskyy on X.
Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is interested “in developing mutually beneficial political and economic cooperation that will benefit both of our nations.”
“We look forward to an era of a strong United States of America under President Trump’s decisive leadership,” he said.
“I appreciate President Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs. This is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in Ukraine closer. I am hopeful that we will put it into action together.”
Italy’s far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also praised Mr Trump’s performance in the election and commented on Italy’s “historic relationship” with the US.
“Italy and the United States are ‘sister’ nations, linked by an unshakeable alliance, common values and a historic friendship. It is a strategic bond which I am sure we will now strengthen even more,” she wrote on X.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he looks forward to achieving “prosperity and freedom” with Mr Trump.
“I congratulate @realDonaldTrump on his election as US President,” Scholz wrote on X.
“Germany and the USA have long been working together successfully to promote prosperity and freedom on both sides of the Atlantic. We will continue to do so for the benefit of our citizens.”
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday congratulated “President Donald Trump”, saying he was ready to work with the US vote frontrunner “with respect and ambition” like “we managed to do for four years”.
In a post on X, Macron said that the relationship with Trump, who is leading the US presidential vote, would “take account of your convictions, and mine”, adding: “For more peace and prosperity.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also congratulated the 78-year-old.
“Congratulations on history’s greatest comeback!” he wrote on X.
“Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America.”
Meanwhile, Hamas says it will judge Mr Trump on his policies concerning Palestine, as conflict continues to rage in the region.
“Our position on the new US administration depends on its positions and practical behaviour towards our Palestinian people, their legitimate rights and their just cause,” Hamas said in a statement.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte says he wants to work with Mr Trump “to advance peace through strength”.
“We face a growing number of challenges globally, from a more aggressive Russia, to terrorism, to strategic competition with China, as well the increasing alignment of China, Russia, North Korea and Iran,” Rutte said.
“Working together through NATO helps to deter aggression, protect our collective security and support our economies.”
