Why Donald Trump’s presidency cost Ivanka so many high-profile friendships

Before her father’s presidency, Ivanka Trump counted a string of A-listers as close personal friends – but one by one, they’ve ditched her.

US election: The huge clue that reveals Ivanka Trump could run for president in 2024

Donald Trump’s presidency has been one of the most controversial periods in US history – and it has also had a serious impact on many of his family’s private relationships.

Wife Melania’s former “best friend” and adviser Stephanie Winston Wolkoff sensationally gave a scathing tell-all interview to 60 Minutes last year after the pair had a dramatic falling out over the course of the Trump administration.

But First Daughter Ivanka appears to have suffered the greatest losses, with a string of high-profile former friends abandoning her over the past four years.

Here are just some of the friendships Ivanka Trump has lost during her father’s presidency.

LYSANDRA OHRSTROM

In November 2020, Vanity Fair published a bombshell article by the First Daughter’s former “best friend” of more than a decade, Lysandra Ohrstrom.

It painted a grim picture of a “shamelessly vain” teen who routinely blamed her misdemeanours on her peers and got away “scot-free”.

Ms Ohrstrom described how she had “grown increasingly repulsed by Ivanka’s ability to aid and abet her father” and how she joined in with many New Yorkers who were “cheering and celebrating her political downfall”.

NATALIE PORTMAN

The Black Swan star became close friends with Ms Trump’s husband Jared Kushner after they met while studying at Harvard.

Over the years, she also became close with Ivanka, attending the couple’s 2009 wedding and wearing her jewellery brand at events.

But in a damning interview with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show in 2018, Portman made it clear that while she and Kushner “were friendly” in the past, the relationship was well and truly over.

“Unfortunately, there’s not a lot funny to say about someone you were friends with becoming a super villain,” Portman said on air.

BLAKE LIVELY

Ivanka Trump and Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively were firm friends a few years ago, with Lively sharing Instagram snaps of gifts from the First Daughter over the years.

The duo attended events together and lived near each other in the Hamptons, with Ms Trump even making an appearance in Gossip Girl back in 2010 – but in 2017, Lively told Variety there was “a lot that’s worrying me as a woman” regarding the Trump administration.

Since then, Ivanka Trump has disappeared from her social media feeds.

EMMY ROSSUM

Rossum was another celebrity guest at Ivanka and Jared’s wedding, with the First Daughter referring to the Shameless actress as a “good friend” in the past.

But since then, Rossum has become a vocal critic of Donald Trump, and she has also singled out Ivanka, sharing a critical article by The Cut on social media.

CHELSEA CLINTON

The two First Daughters moved in the same Manhattan circles and were good friends before the Trump presidency.

But that came to an abrupt end once Donald Trump began attacking Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign.

In October 2020, Ms Clinton told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live that they were no longer on speaking terms.

“I’ve not spoken to her since 2016 … I have no interest in being friends with someone who is not only complicit but actively taking part in this administration’s everyday collision of cruelty and incompetence,” she said.

“We were in touch at the beginning of the campaign, but it’s just really hard when there’s someone who’s actively embracing their candidate, whether it’s their father or not, who is trafficking in racism and sexism and anti-Semitism and Islamophobia and homophobia and transphobia and conspiracy theories and lies, and is so fundamentally corrupt.”

OTHER EX-FRIENDS

On November 13,Vanity Fairpublished an article with quotes from a number of ex-friends of “Javanka”, who claimed they would be given the cold shoulder once they left the White House and attempted to re-enter high society.

“Everyone with self-respect, a career, morals, respect for democracy, or who doesn’t want their friends to shame them both in private and public will steer clear,” one told reporter Emily Jane Fox, while another said: “There will always be private dinner parties for them to attend, but they will be the entertainment.”
