US election: Americans lose their minds over Nevada counting delay

Everyone was waiting to see which way a key battleground state would go. But the delay until tomorrow has sent America into meltdown.

It’s one of the key results everyone wants to know - who’s won Nevada?

And while officials got everyone’s hopes up, indicating they would release results in America this evening, state officials in Nevada reverted to their original plan of updating results Thursday at noon (4am Friday ADST).

Before that Joe Biden had a reasonable path to clearing the 270 electoral vote threshold tonight in the US.

Fox News and AP has called Arizona for Mr Biden, so he would only need Nevada to get to the 270 electoral college votes and become the next president.

But Americans won’t get that answer before bed as they’d hoped - and they aren’t happy about it.

Mr Biden is currently leading Donald Trump narrowly with 49.3 per cent of the vote to Mt Trump’s 48.7 per cent, with an estimated 85 per cent of votes have been counted.

Officials in Washoe County, home to Reno, said they hoped to finish tabulating all 9000 outstanding mail-in ballots for reporting on Thursday morning.

More than, 5000 additional ballots — provisional ballots and those cast with same-day registrations — will also have to be tabulated in Washoe.

Election officials must also count any mail ballot that was postmarked by November 3 and that arrives by November 10.

Deanna Spikula, the registrar of voters in the county, emphasised the need for patience.

“I know everyone is eager to get the final results in the state tomorrow, but I caution everyone to wait,” she said.

In more populous Clark County, home to Las Vegas, elections officials did not say how many additional ballots they had counted today.

In Arizona, more than 400,000 mail and drop-off ballots are yet to be counted in Maricopa County, the state’s most populous.

Fox News and the Associated Press have already called Arizona for Biden.

County officials said vote totals would be updated at 9pm Eastern (1pm ADST Thursday).

Officials in Pima County, home to Tucson, said they would post updates sometime Wednesday.

There are an estimated 26,000 to 34,000 early ballots left to count in Pima, as well as about 18,000 provisional ballots.
