US election 2020: Three states that haven’t been called yet

We’re a week from election day and Joe Biden has been declared victorious – but the results from a handful of key states are yet to be called.

US Election: How the polls go it wrong and why it will only get worse

It’s now been a week since election day, and Joe Biden has been declared victorious.

But that doesn’t mean the vote counting has stopped – with three states, two of which are considered as “battlegrounds”, yet to be called for either Mr Biden or current President Donald Trump.

While there looks to be a clear winner in each, ballots are still being tallied in Georgia, Alaska and North Carolina.

Considering it took multiple days for a President to be decided, this isn’t surprising or unusual – asThe New York Timespointed out, “because of how many people voted by mail, the process isn’t as far along as it would normally be at this point, and that means the outcomes of quite a few races remain unclear”.

It’s worth noting that regardless of whether Mr Trump or Mr Biden win the following states – the overall outcome of the election is unlikely to change. Here’s the latest on where they stand.

GEORGIA (16 ELECTORAL VOTES)

In Georgia, 98 per cent of the votes have been counted – with Mr Biden, according to the most recent release of results, leading Mr Trump by more than 12,600 votes.

State officials have already said the results will be close enough for a recount as soon as the first vote count is concluded – meaning it’s unlikely we’ll know which candidate “won” Georgia for quite some time yet.

If Mr Biden’s lead does hold and the Peach State is eventually called for him, it will mark the fourth reliably red state that’s been flipped blue this election.

It’s been 28 years since Georgia gave its 16 electoral votes to a Democratic president – that being Bill Clinton, in 1992.

Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp wrote in a tweet yesterday that his state would count “ONLY legally cast ballots”, prompting Mr Trump to falsely declare – not for the first time – that this was “good news” because “it means I won!”

ALASKA (3 ELECTORAL VOTES)

In better news for the defeated President, Alaska and its three electoral votes look set to go to him.

The state didn’t start counting mail ballots until this week – and with roughly 61 per cent of the votes now counted, Mr Trump is leading Mr Biden by roughly 54,598 votes.

While it’s not clear how long it will take to get a result from Alaska, the state’s target date for formally certifying the results isn’t until November 25.

NORTH CAROLINA (15 ELECTORAL VOTES)

Mr Trump is maintaining a narrow lead on Mr Biden in North Carolina, and looks likely to claim its 15 electoral votes – though counting is set to continue for a few more days yet.

At this point, 98 per cent of the state’s ballots have been counted, with Mr Trump 74,870 votes ahead.

The President initially claimed on election night that he “clearly won North Carolina”, saying that Mr Biden “can’t catch us”.

WHEN WILL WE HAVE A FINAL RESULT?

All of America’s states have until December 14 to settle any disputes over who their state is called for – which is when each state’s electoral college elector casts their vote.

Congress then meets on January 6 for a final tally and certification.
