Trump’s insult after Biden ends campaign

Within minutes of Joe Biden pulling out, Donald Trump was reacting. He had nothing good to say but Republicans are worried.

Biden drops out of Presidential race and backs Harris against Trump

Donald Trump has weighed in on Joe Biden dropping out of the election race slamming him in a phone call to a news network and saying he should step down immediately.

“He is the single worst president by far,” the former president said.

And already senior Republicans have begun sharpening their attacks on Vice President Kamala Haris in anticipation she will now go head-to-head with Trump.

On Sunday afternoon (US time) Mr Biden finally caved to intense pressure from his own party and on social media ended his bid for re-election.

“While it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Mr Biden, 81, wrote in a letter he posted on his X account.

“I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision.

“It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve as your President.”

‘Single worst president’

It didn’t take long for Donald Trump, now the official Republican nominee for president, to chime in.

“He is the worst president in the history of our country. He goes down as the single worst president by far in the history of our country,” Trump, 78, said in a phone call to CNN.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump went further saying Mr Biden shouldn't even see out his term.

He posted a typically bombastic message which was in sharp contrast to his more unifying tone at last week’s Republican National Convention (RNC).

“Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve — And never was! He only attained the position of President by lies, Fake News, and not leaving his basement.”

“All those around him, including his Doctor and the Media, knew that he wasn’t capable of being President, and he wasn’t.

“We will suffer greatly because of his presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly.”

Trump: Harris ‘easier to defeat’ than Biden

Biden has endorsed Ms Harris to replace him on the ballot.

Trump said bullishly that he expected Ms Harris would be easier to defeat than Mr Biden, should she become the Democratic nominee.

However, there will be a concern in the party that a switch up could change the dynamic of the election race and not necessarily in their favour.

Mr Biden’s age and frailty was undoubtedly an issue which the GOP hoped could bring many voters in the centre over to Trump.

Ms Harris has also been performing better in some polls in a theoretical matchup between her and Trump.

At the RNC in Milwaukee, where Trump was confirmed as the presidential nominee and JD Vance his running mate, Ms Harris’ name was mentioned often.

It seemed a clear sign that the party believed there was a solid chance that the eventual match up would not be Biden vs. Trump but Harris vs. Trump.

Former presidential candidate and the US Ambassador to the UN under Trump Nikki Haley took a swipe at Ms Harris during her speech on Tuesday.

“For more than a year, I said a vote for Joe Biden is a vote for President Kamala Harris.

“After seeing the debate, everyone knows it’s true. If we have four more years of Biden or a single day of Harris, our country will be badly worse off.”

However, one of Ms Harris’ key roles was the security of the border with Mexico which has been a key point of attack by Trump.

Should she become the nominee he will likely blame any immigration issues directly on her.

That's already begun with Donald Trump Jr leading the charge within an hour of Mr Biden's announcement.

“Kamala Harris owns the entire left-wing policy record of Joe Biden,” he said on social media.

“The only difference is that she is even more liberal and less competent than Joe, which is really saying something. She was put in charge of the border and we saw the worst invasion of illegals in our history!!!”

An advertising campaign backed by a key Republican fundraiser has already taken aim at Ms Harris.

“Kamala … covered up Joe’s obvious mental decline. Kamala knew Joe couldn’t do the job, so she did it.

“Look what she got done: a border invasion, runaway inflation, the American Dream dead. They created this mess. They, no, Kamala, owns this failed record,” the ad proclaimed.
