Moment Biden self imploded in debate
It’s not been the greatest debate so far for President Joe Biden with him stumbling with Donald Trump replying “I really don’t know what he said”.
Donald Trump and Joe Biden are facing off against one another in the first crucial presidential debate and one of the key fears of Democrats is that the President will show signs of his age.
Mr Biden is 81, three years older than Mr Trump.
The pair are going head to head in the first of two presidential debates prior to November’s election.
But, to the dismay of Mr Biden’s supporters, Mr Biden stumbled early on in the debate – at one moment seemingly freezing on the stage.
The President was fielding a question on the national debt.
He said the country has “1000 billionaires” and if they paid 25 per cent in tax that would bring in $500 million to help pay off the debt.
But then it began to go south, with Mr Biden mumbling and stopping talking for a moment.
“(We’re) making sure that we’re able to make every single solitary person … er, eligible for what I’ve been able to do with the … uh … with the Covid. Excuse me, with, dealing with everything we had to do with … uh … look”.
After a brief pause, he then said “we finally beat Medicare” as his final comment.
Medicare is a public health program in the US, similar to Australia’s Medicare, not something a Democratic would want to “beat”.
“He was right. He did beat Medicare,” replied Mr Trump jumping on the gaffe.
“He beat it to death and he’s destroying Medicare.
“Because all of these people are coming in (immigrants) — they’re putting them on Medicare, they’re putting them on social security … This man is going to single-handedly destroy social security.”
While Mr Biden has had some comebacks to a strongly performing Mr Trump, he’s also had other moments where he’s flubbed lines and figures.
One such moment was an answer from Mr Biden on immigration.
“I’ve changed the way that now you’re in a situation where 40 per cent fewer (people are) coming across the border legally, especially when (Mr Trump) left office, to continue the moment till we get to total ban, the total initiative, relative to what we’re going to do with more Border Patrol”.
Mr Trump said afterwards: “I really don’t know what he said at the end of this”.
Biden fires back
But Mr Biden has landed some blows too.
The former president claimed that Mr Biden “doesn’t care about our veterans”.
“Every single thing he said was a lie. Every single one,” Mr Biden said, whose late son is a veteran.
“My son spent a year in Iraq, living next to one of those burn pits, came back with Stage 4 gleblastoma.
“I was recently in France for D-Day. I spoke all about those heroes that died. I went to the World War I cemetery he refused to go to.
“He didn’t want to go there because they’re a bunch of losers and suckers.
“My son was not a loser or a sucker. You’re the loser. You’re the sucker.”
Mr Trump claimed the quote was “made up”.
