Ivanka Trump says blanket lockdowns ‘not grounded in science’

In a move her father would be proud of, Ivanka Trump has jumped on the anti-lockdown train, claiming that they’re “not grounded in science”.

As thousands of Americans continue to die from COVID-19, Ivanka Trump has spoken out against “blanket lockdowns” in states across the nation, claiming that the measures “are not grounded in science”.

The 39-year-old, whose role as a Senior Adviser to her father, outgoing President Donald Trump, is in its dying days, took to Twitter overnight to share a man’s rant after he was ordered by public health inspectors to close his business.

“These blanket lockdowns are not grounded in science,” Ms Trump wrote.

“These arbitrary rules imposed by callous politicians are destroying lives. It is just wrong for small business owners to have (to) fight so hard to keep their American dream alive.”

Turns out the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree, after all.

Ms Trump picked possibly the worst possible moment to decry shutdowns – the US is hurtling toward an estimated 450,000 deaths by February and “the most difficult time in the public health history of this nation”, the director of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has warned.

The “noted scientist” quickly copped backlash for her message, with NYU media research scientist and instructor Justin Hendrix writing, “None of this would even be happening if you had listened to the scientists from the start.”

“But you didn’t, and now … hundreds of thousands are dead and things are happening in local communities that seem chaotic. Don’t blame them for the chain of events you started,” he added.

“It will never stop amazing us that in the midst of the worst pandemic in a century, rather than turning to doctors and scientists, the closest advisers to the president were his fashion-brand owning daughter and her slumlord husband,” government watchdog, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, wrote.

“This is why we need tighter nepotism laws.”

COVID-denialism is, as we know by now, a bit of a family affair for the Trumps, with Ms Trump’s outburst coming as CNN reported that her stepmother, Melania Trump, “broke stated mask policy at Children’s National Hospital when she removed her mask to read a holiday book to children”.

The First Lady’s move was in contravention of the hospital’s policy which states: “All staff, families/caregivers and visitors must wear a mask at all times while in any Children’s National facility to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

Ahead of her visit she tweeted some photos of previous events, saying: “ Every year I cherish my visit to @ChildrensNatl to read a holiday story to the children & meet with the dedicated & inspiring healthcare professionals. This will be my 4th holiday visit there & I look forward to spending time again with so many brave children & their families.”
