Donald Trump Jr now Donald Trump’s most senior political adviser

Donald Trump’s eldest child has scored himself an unlikely new role, promoted to a key position just as his father weighs a comeback.

US election: The huge clue that reveals Ivanka Trump could run for President in 2024

As the family continues to adjust to post-White House life, Donald Trump’s eldest child has scored himself an “unofficial” new role, promoted to become the former US president’s most senior political adviser.

While the 74-year-old’s “heir apparent” Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, served as his senior advisers during his presidency, the couple have seemingly sought distance from his political ambitions since January (probably to pursue their own) — leaving the spot wide open for Donald Trump Jr.

Multiple sources have told CNN that Mr Trump Jr has been “elevated to an unofficial new role inside his orbit as (Mr Trump Sr) weighs the idea of a comeback presidential bid in 2024 that would require him to maintain a vise grip on the Republican base for any chance of success”.

Those close to Mr Trump Sr or involved with his political operation declared that his eldest son “has emerged as one of the former president’s chief political advisers”.

“Like his brother-in-law Jared Kushner, who spent much of the last four years attempting to steer the Trump show from inside the West Wing, Trump Jr has been working closely with his father’s team to ensure the next iteration of the 45th President’s political career is running smoothly and that his father is endorsing reliably conservative candidates,” the publication reports.

According to CNN, the 43-year-old’s new gig goes far beyond just “operational guidance”.

Undeniably the most conservative of the former leader’s five children, “Donny”, as he’s reportedly called by his father, did not work inside the White House during the Trump administration. As is the family way, this means he’s likely to be wildly unqualified for the role.

And yet, Mr Trump Jr “has been steadily influencing his father’s political instincts”.

“Trump Jr’s impact was on full display earlier this month, when Trump caught himself fuming at a televised interview with Governor Asa Hutchinson over the Arkansas Republican’s stance on transgender issues, one that would have previously escaped his attention,” CNN reports.

“Unlike the days when Trump would camp out in an annex off the Oval Office, griping to aides about critical cable coverage he’d seen of himself or his administration, this time he was incensed by Hutchinson’s veto of a Republican-backed bill blocking gender-affirming treatments for transgender youth in his state … Two days later, the ex-president released a statement accusing Hutchinson of supporting the ‘chemical castration of children’.”

Having made numerous transphobic statements over the years, “it was abundantly clear” that Mr Trump Jr was behind his father’s move, those within the ex-president’s orbit said.

“Don has the pulse of the base and knows where the energy of the party is, so he’s sort of the go-to person now on a lot of political things,” one Trump aide said.

“He was always fighting for the cause big-picture wise, but now Don is taking more of a leading role in shaping the political direction of Trump’s post-presidency,” someone close to the younger Trump added.
