Donald Trump hit by another damning resignation, as acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf walks

The mass exodus of senior figures in Donald Trump’s chaotic White House continues, with another resignation over the US Capitol siege.

Could Trump be the first president in history to be impeached twice?

Amid fears of a major armed “uprising” across the United States next week, Donald Trump has been hit by yet another damning resignation.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf has walked away from Mr Trump’s team as security concerns rise in the wake of the US Capitol attack and just days before the transition of power.

The announcement makes him the third person to resign from Mr Trump’s cabinet after the attack by the president’s supporters on the US Capitol last week.

It’s unclear whether it’s directly related to last week’s riots, but in a letter Mr Wolf said his decision was “warranted by recent events”.

This came just after Mr Wolf said he found the action by Mr Trump’s supporters in the halls of Congress “sickening” and urged the president to “strongly condemn” the violence.

“While I have consistently condemned political violence on both sides of the aisle, specifically violence directed at law enforcement, we now see some supporters of the president using violence as a means to achieve political ends,” he said.

It comes as Democrats in Congress have formally introduced an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump, with a vote on the matter expected to come within days.

All eyes still remain on Vice President Mike Pence, who has been given a day to decide whether he will invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Mr Trump from office.

That is almost certainly not going to happen, so the next step will be for the House to vote on impeachment. That will happen either tomorrow or on Wednesday. The single article charges Mr Trump with “incitement of insurrection”.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said Mr Trump represents an “imminent threat” to American democracy

“What happened was a terrible, terrible violation of the Capitol, of the first branch of government, by the President of the United States,” she told 60 Minutes last night.

“This President is guilty of inciting insurrection. He has to pay a price for that.”

ABC News has obtained an FBI bulletin which warns of pro-Trump groups’ plans to stage more “uprisings” in the lead-up to Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20.

“Armed protests are being planned at all 50 state capitols from January 16 through at least January 20, and at the US Capitol from January 17 through January 20,” the bulletin says.

Meanwhile, the FBI has “received information about an identified armed group intending to travel to Washington D.C. on January 16”.

“They have warned that if Congress attempts to remove Donald Trump via the 25th Amendment, a huge uprising will occur.”
