Donald Trump convinced he’s going to win election

British TV host Piers Morgan hadn’t heard from Donald Trump in months, but the President surprised him with a call and made a big prediction.

US election: How people are voting along Route 66

Donald Trump is convinced he’s going to win the US election despite trailing in the polls, Piers Morgan has claimed after a phone call with the President.

The British breakfast TV host said that Trump was confident he could defy the odds on November 3, The US Sun reports.

The pair, who have been friends for many years, fell out over a Daily Mail column in April – in which Morgan lashed out at the President over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Morgan says the column infuriated Trump who did not speak to him for months until he received an unexpected phone call last Friday.

It followed an appearance on Fox News last Friday, where the Morgan promised to give Trump the secret to winning the election.

Writing in the Mail today, Morgan said the pair had “a cordial free-rolling 25-minute exchange” – and that Trump was still determined to win next week.

Morgan wrote: “One thing’s absolutely clear: Trump genuinely believes he’s going to get re-elected.

“This is not a belief supported by any polls right now, but then, as he pointed out, ‘the polls were all wrong last time.’”

He said that, during the call, Trump sounded “unbelievably fired up for the challenge of being re-elected”.

Despite the President’s optimism, he still trails Democratic nominee Joe Biden in the polls.

An average of 10 domestic polls compiled by the British Daily Telegraph indicates that just over half of Americans back Biden – with Trump trailing by around five or six points.

But Morgan believes that Trump can still claw back the election for the Republicans with his “fire-breathing energy and showmanship” on the campaign trail.

By contrast, he said Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden has “remained hidden away for much of his campaign” – and that the former Vice President “looks and sounds like the old man of 77 that he is”.

But Morgan acknowledged this could turn out to be a “brilliant strategy” should Biden win the election.

University of Florida Professor Michael McDonald, who administers the US elections project, predicts that 150 million Americans will cast their vote this year.

This means that the 2020 election could have the highest voter turnout in over a century.

Many states have expanded in-person early voting and mail-in ballots in a bid to provide Americans with a safe way to vote amid the coronavirus pandemic.
