Donald Trump considering a special counsel into Joe Biden’s son

Donald Trump is reportedly pushing to ramp up the pressure on Joe Biden’s son Hunter before he is kicked out of the White House.

Outgoing President Donald Trump is reportedly using some of his final weeks in the White House to ramp up the pressure on Joe Biden’s son Hunter.

Mr Trump is considering appointing a special counsel to continue the federal tax investigation into Hunter Biden.

Trump administration officials and Republicans close to the White House told the Associated Press that Mr Trump had spoken to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and White House counsel Pat Cipollone about the possible move.

The push for the special council comes after Mr Trump was angered after outgoing Attorney-General William Barr didn’t publicly announce the two-year investigation into Hunter before the presidential election.

The investigation was brought to light by Hunter himself, announcing last week that he was under federal investigation for his “tax affairs”.

“I learned yesterday for the first time that the US Attorney’s Office in Delaware advised my legal counsel, also yesterday, that they are investigating my tax affairs,” the 50-year-old said in a statement released by the Biden-Harris transition.

“I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisers.”

The Biden-Harris transition added, “President-elect Biden is deeply proud of his son, who has fought through difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks of recent months, only to emerge stronger.”

It’s unclear whether or not incoming Acting Attorney-General Jeffrey Rosen would agree with Mr Trump that a special counsel on Hunter is warranted.

According to the Associated Press, Mr Trump is considering potentially firing Acting Attorney-General Rosen if he does not make the special counsel appointment and replacing him with someone who might – though no final decision has been made.

Sources also told the publication that the outgoing President is looking into appointing a different special counsel to investigate his so-far unfounded claims of widespread election fraud.

These reports come just days after Mr Trump said he is pushing to declassify “everything” before he leaves office as he continued to rage against Democrats for alleged “spying” and “treason”.

Mr Trump shared a tweet from author Todd Starnes on Saturday morning that said, “At this point @realDonaldTrump should declassify everything. Everything.”

Mr Trump added: “I have been doing this. I agree!”

He then went on a rant accusing President-elect Biden’s campaign and his son, among others, of spying and treason.

“IF Biden gets in, nothing will happen to Hunter or Joe,” Mr Trump tweeted.

“Barr will do nothing, and the new group of partisan killers coming in will quickly kill it all.

“Same thing with Durham. We caught them cold, spying, treason & more (the hard part), but ‘Justice’ took too long. Will be DOA!”

The younger Biden has come under intense scrutiny in the past year for his role on the board of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian gas company, while his father as vice president was in charge of US policy toward Ukraine.

Mr Trump was impeached last year after allegedly withholding US aid to Ukraine on a condition that the country investigate Joe Biden and Hunter.

Mr Hunter’s other business dealings, including in China, and his father’s alleged role in them, have also come under scrutiny.

Many of these allegations were based off of a trove of emails, images and other documents sourced from an abandoned laptop allegedly belonging to Hunter.

The MacBook Pro had been dropped off at a computer repair shop in Wilmington, Delaware in 2019 and never picked up. The owner eventually took legal possession of the computer, and turned it over to authorities after becoming concerned at the contents.

Some of the emails and text messages, which were later corroborated by former Biden family business partner Tony Bobulinski, appeared to link Hunter with questionable business deals in China and Ukraine.

The owner later provided a copy of the laptop’s contents to Mr Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani and former White House strategist Steve Bannon, claiming he did so because he was concerned about the lack of action from authorities.

Stories of the allegations were then fed to the media in the lead up to the election.
