Biden‘s dogs now in the White House
One of Biden’s dogs, his German Shepherd Major, will be the first ever rescue dog to call the White House home.
The victory of Democratic candidate Joe Biden in the 2020 US election means something particularly special for animal lovers - for the first time, a rescue dog will call the White House home.
Mr Biden has two German Shepherds, Champ and Major, who will move into the Washington DC residence with him.
Major is a rescue dog, and Twitter have officially named he and his friend Champ “DOTUS”, or Dogs of the United States, a play on the President’s official acronym POTUS.

The Bidens got Champ as a puppy in 2008, while Biden was serving as vice president to then POTUS Barack Obama.
They adopted Major much later, after they rescued him in 2018 after the Delaware Humane Association rescued a sick litter of German Shepherd puppies. Major was one of them.
“We are so happy to welcome Major to the Biden family, and we are grateful to the Delaware Humane Association for their work in finding forever homes for Major and countless other animals,” the Bidens said in a statement at the time.
Major was “from the litter of German shepherd pups that were surrendered and not doing well at all,” according to the Delaware Humane Association.
“Once we posted about them for your help, Joe Biden caught wind of them and reached out immediately. The rest is history,“ the group wrote on Facebook.
That makes Major the first rescue dog to ever set foot in the White House.

The White House has been depressingly dog-less these last four years, with Trump not appearing to be a fan of the canine species.
Champ and Major often feature on the Bidens‘ social media.
“No ruff days on the trail when I have some Major motivation,” Biden wrote in the lead-up to the election.
Part of the Biden’s election campaign centred around their dogs.
“Let’s put a dog back in the White House,” some of his election posts read.

Many dog owners were stoked to see another dog nosing their way into the presidential suite.
Internet sensation Doug the Pug weighed in on the news that Biden would be the next president of the US.
“THERE WILL BE DOGS IN THE WHITE HOUSE AGAIN,” the account tweeted.
