A wave of criticism has crashed upon the outgoing US President, with a furious chorus weighing in on the most on-the-nose decision in recent memory.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy has blasted outgoing US President Joe Biden, joining the chorus of online commentators weighing in on the 82-year-old’s controversial pardon handed to his son Hunter.

The deeply polarising eleventh-hour move, which granted Hunter a sweeping pardon for any federal crimes committed from 2014 onward, immediately sparked outrage across the political spectrum.

Portnoy, who has made a name for himself with his known for his brash, unfiltered commentary, went a step further even by his own standards in a blistering rant this week.

He accused Mr Biden and the Democratic Party of being “f**king scumbag liars” and branded them hypocrites.

“I never want to hear Democrats lecture Americans about having the moral high ground ever again,” he posted to his 3.3 million followers on X.

He pointed to Biden’s previous statements where the lifelong Democrat insisted he wouldn’t pardon his son, only to flip on that promise in the dying weeks of his term.

“I’ve been saying it over, and over, and over, and why the Democrats got slaughtered in the election because they think they’re morally superior to everybody else,” Portnoy said.

“So any Democrat, and lots of them, whenever you say ‘‘What a f**king liar Biden and the Democrats are, can you believe it?’ They always [say] ‘Yeah, but but but, Trump.

Portnoy argued Biden’s pardon was a part of a broader, sanctimonious theme behind the Democrats’ approach to politics, lamenting, “This is why you got obliterated at the election.”

“Here’s the thing. What the Democrats have done for 12 years is take this moral high ground that we’re the righteous party, the truth, honesty, integrity. And Trump is a threat to democracy. ‘He’s Hitler, and he’s a Nazi’, and this, and that.

“And then the Democrats, whether it’s the primary or this, time and again, they’re worse than anything Trump has ever done.

“This engine us just lying straight to our face, pretending they’re the moral, righteous authority, and thinking the American people are so stupid that we don’t see through it.

“I’d pardon my son too,” Portnoy admitted, but he stressed that unlike Biden, he wouldn’t lie about it.

“It’s just so crazy.”

Incoming President Trump lashed Mr Biden in similarly fierce spray, capitalising on the opportunity to knock his rival party down another peg.

Mr Trump called it an “abuse and miscarriage of justice”.

Taking to his social media platform, Truth Social, he also asked whether Biden’s pardon would also include the January 6 “hostages”.

“Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years?” he asked on the platform.

Pardon causes rift in Democratic party

Conservatives were always going to have a field day with the pardon, but it seems Mr Biden’s decision was a little too on the nose even for some of his most loyal Democrats.

The pardon stirred a wave of criticism from within his own party, with several Democrats speaking out in the hours after it was made public.

Representative Greg Stanton of Arizona called it a case of Biden “getting this one wrong,” while Senator Michael Bennet argued that the move “erodes Americans’ faith that the justice system is fair and equal for all.”

Representative Greg Landsman said he understood the President’s decision but added that it’s “a setback for those who want people to believe in public service again.”

Other prominent Democrats, including Senator Peter Welch, labelled the pardon “unwise,” while Senator Tammy Baldwin warned that pardons should not be used for “family members or to hand out political favours.”

Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez lamented that the pardon reinforces the perception of a “two-tier justice system,” where “well-connected people are often gifted special treatment.”

Some Democrats are concerned about the long-term impact it has for their party, as they begin another arduous four-year challenge to find a resolute leader to run in 2028.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis warned it set a “bad precedent that could be abused by later Presidents”, while Representative Jared Golden called it an “unfortunate precedent”.
