Kellyanne Conway hits back at Chelsea Clinton over ‘Bowling Green massacre’ gaffe

AFTER Chelsea Clinton told Kellyanne Conway to stop “making up attacks”, Donald Trump’s adviser fired back at the former first daughter.

Conway Walks Back 'Bowling Green Massacre' Comment

DONALD Trump’s senior adviser Kellyanne Conway has hit back at Chelsea Clinton who had taunted Conway via Twitter over her “Bowling Green massacre” gaffe.

“I misspoke, you lost the election,” Ms Conway tweeted, after Clinton had earlier tweeted at her to stop “making up attacks.”

On Thursday night US time, Ms Conway said that the media had failed to cover the “Bowling Green massacre” carried out by two Iraqi men in Kentucky six years ago.

Defending Trump’s policy barring citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries, Ms Conway said that the so-called massacre was why Barack Obama had put a hold on refugees in 2011.

“I bet it’s brand new information to people that President Obama had a six-month ban on the Iraqi refugee program after two Iraqis came here to this country, were radicalised and they were the masterminds behind the Bowling Green massacre,” Ms Conway told MSNBC news.

“It didn’t get covered.”

But the reason it didn’t get covered is because it never happened.

Ms Conway later tweeted to say that she had meant to say “Bowling Green terrorists”, as opposed to massacre, before posting a flurry of tweets in which she said how “honest mistakes abound”, suggesting the media was unfairly targeting her.

Ms Conway, whose gaffe has resulted in a storm of derision on Twitter over the “fake massacre”, was referring to Iraqi refugees Mohanad Shareef Hammadi and Waad Ramadan Alwan.

Hammadi, 29, and Alwan, 45, are currently serving time in a federal prison. And at the time of their arrest on terrorism charges they lived in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

But the men were never accused of carrying out or plotting any attacks on US soil.

They were convicted and jailed for conspiring to blow up US soldiers in Iraq with improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Alwan confessed that he “twice blew up Bradley tanks, and on one occasion participated in an attack that killed US soldiers.”

He spoke of his efforts killing US servicemen, saying that “lunch and dinner would be an American.”

Alwan received a 40-year sentence and Hammadi was sentenced to life in prison on terrorism charges after being given asylum in the US from Iraq.

Hammadi, who had left his native Iraq for Syria, emigrated to the US in 2009 after applying for refugee status.

Alwan applied to be a refugee after allegedly fleeing Iraq for Syria because he was wanted at home “for insurgent activities”.

The men found haven in Kentucky. According to ABC-TV, the pair were among a dozen suspected terrorist bombmakers targeting US troops overseas who the FBI says were mistakenly given war refugee status.

Alwan and Hammadi were also convicted of attempting to send weapons and money to Al-Qaeda in Iraq for the purposes of killing US soldiers.

The men thought they were moving more than half a million dollars of equipment including rocket propelled grenade launchers, machine guns, sniper rifles, grenades and surface to air missile launchers. But authorities were videotaping the men and the plot was foiled.

The US Department of Justice described the men as ”experienced terrorists who willingly and enthusiastically participated in what they believed were insurgent support operations designed to harm American soldiers in Iraq.”

Not surprisingly, Twitter was merciless about the Trump aide’s invention.

Other Twitter posters complained about the “fake massacre” or posted derisive memes as well as pictures of the Bowling Green grid iron team being “massacred” by the Ohio State team in a football match.

David Schneider posted: “It’s not just the Bowling Green Massacre. Refugees were also behind the Narnia Bombings, the shootings in Atlantis and the Midsomer Murders.”

Ms Conway last made media headlines when she coined the phrase “alternative facts” to describe the White House’s claim Trump’s inauguration had the largest audience in history.
