A 16-year-old has been called a hero after he died trying to wrestle a gun off the Michigan school shooter as a fourth student died in hospital.

A fourth student has died after a 15-year-old opened fire at his Michigan high school on Tuesday.

The death toll from the tragedy at Oxford High School rose to four as a 17-year-old boy, Justin Shilling, succumbed to his injuries.

It was also revealed that the gunman’s father bought the weapon just four days before the rampage.

One of the victims, Tate Myre, 16, has been called a hero by police who said he tried to disarm the shooter at Oxford High School before later dying in a police car as deputies rushed him to hospital.

Myre was described by a fellow Michigan high school football player as a beloved athlete in the area.

“He was a standout player. He inspired many people and was loved by many people,” Matt Johnson, 17, told the New York Post.

The two other victims were Hana St. Juliana, 14 and Madisyn Baldwin, 17, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

The 15-year-old suspect also wounded seven other students, ranging in age from 14 to 17, and a 47-year-old teacher, authorities said.

Three of the injured students, a 15-year-old boy, and two girls, ages 14 and 17, are in critical condition.

The shooter was uninjured and taken into custody in the hallway of the school by deputies who arrived on scene within 2 to 3 minutes of the first 911 call reporting the gunfire.

the weapon used in the shooting was a 9mm Sig Sauer pistol that was purchased by the boy’s father on Nov. 26.

Terrifying video captured the moment the shooter attempted to lure students out of a barricaded classroom by impersonating a police officer.

The footage uploaded to social media was taken inside the Oxford High School.

In the video, students can be seen huddled inside a barricaded classroom.

“Sheriff’s office, you can come out,” the boy says.

The students whisper to each other uncertainly, but one refuses to open the door. “We’re not willing to take that risk right now,” he says.

The gunman then says “OK, well, just open the door, and look at my eyes, bro.”

It then dawns on the students that it is the shooter, one person says “red flag”and they rush to jump out the window.

Police were called to Oxford High School — about 50km north of Detroit — at 12.51pm ET and apprehended the suspect within five minutes.

The alleged shooter was uninjured and is not answering questions at this time, Undersheriff Michael McCabe said.

A handgun was also recovered at the scene.

“We believe he acted alone. There are no other shooters, there’s not another gunman,” Mr McCabe said.

“We don’t believe he planned this with anyone else, but we’ll be doing social media checks, talking to students.”

One student told local news station WDTV4 that there had been threats posted online in recent days.

“Yeah that is right,” he said.

“I’d been hearing the threats too. You know, kids they play around and say, ‘We’re going to shoot up the school.’ You’re not supposed to play around with that. This is serious. You can’t do that. So it’s a lot of stuff that’s been going on.”

Multiple injured victims were transported to local hospitals, a spokesman for the Oxford Fire Department said.

Law enforcement received at least 100 emergency calls after the shooting.

An Oakland County Sheriff’s deputy who is assigned to Oxford High School was one of the officers who took the suspect into custody, Mr McCabe said.

Several ambulances and dozens of police officers were outside of the high school following the shooting.

A medical helicopter from the University of Michigan landed in the school’s parking lot around 2pm ET.

Student Ayden Sanders posted photos on Snapchat of a bullet hole in a door and chairs students used to barricade themselves inside classrooms.

“At first we were joking around then we heard all sorts of commotion and stuff and everyone was like, ‘Oh snap, this isn’t a drill,’” he told The Daily Beast.

“Everybody started freaking out… crying, hyperventilating.”

Evacuated students were sent to a grocery store across the street from the high school for reunification with relatives.

President Biden was briefed on the shooting ahead of a tour at Dakota County Technical College in Minnesota, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.

“The travelling team will remain in close touch with the team back at the White House and provide regular updates to the president as new information surfaces,” Ms Psaki said.

Michigan senator Rosemary Bayer said in a statement: “The news of today’s school shooting at Oxford High school is simply horrifying.

“On top of an already difficult situation with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our students now have to face this traumatic situation in a place that is supposed to be a safe space for students and growth.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer wrote on Twitter: “I’m devastated for the students, teachers, staff, and families of Oxford High School.

“The death of multiple students and shooting of others, including a teacher, is horrific.

“My heart is with the parents who had their children taken from them and with the entire Oxford community.”
