“My condolences to those who lost their life. I am very sad that people lost their life and there are victims out there. I wish speedy recovery to them.
“I have no idea why he would do that.
“Why would he do something like this. I have absolutely no idea.”
Syed is reportedly married to Khan’s sister, Saira Khan, who is missing said her brother. Their six month old child has been left in the care of Syed’s mother reported Heavy.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Farook had traveled to Saudi Arabia and returned with a wife he met online. The couple were “living the American dream”, Patrick Baccari who shared a work cubicle with Farook told the news organisation.
Syed’s father, who goes by the same name, also expressed shock when he learnt about his son’s involvement in the massacre, the New York Daily News reported.
“He was very religious. He would go to work, come back, go to pray, come back. He’s Muslim,” his father said.
The shooting is said to have been sparked after a fight broke out at a Christmas party at the Regional Center. Police said Syed left the festivities angry and then returned with a 27-year-old female, Tashfeen Malik. The two are believed to have opened fire on the crowd. Tashfeen was later killed along with Syed when police chased their SUV.
His father said Syed worked as a health technician inspecting restaurants and hotels and graduated from La Sierra High School in 2003 according to the New York Daily News.
The pair haven’t been in contact for quite a while.
“He’s married and has a kid. We’re estranged because my wife got the divorce, and they are together,” the father said. “She doesn’t want to see me.”
Neighbours of Syed are equally shocked to learn of his involvement.
“He was quiet but always polite,” Maria Gutierrez told the New York Daily News.
“Maybe two years ago he became more religious. He grew a beard and started to wear religious clothing. The long shirt that’s like a dress and the cap on his head.”
“If it’s him, I’m very surprised. Can you imagine? They were my neighbours for so many years. I never would guess.”
A colleague of Syed’s also said he was a quiet man.
“He was very quiet,” said Griselda Reisinger, who worked for 11 years as environmental inspector.
“I would say hi and bye, but we never engaged him in conversation. He didn’t say much at all,” she told the LA Times.
She said Syed recently returned from paternity leave.
